Understanding Standard Container Sizes

Shipping containers come in several standard sizes, but the two most common are the 20-foot and 40-foot models. Understanding the difference can save you money and ensure you get the right solution for your needs.

The 20-Foot Container

A standard 20-foot container (also called a TEU — Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) measures approximately 20' long × 8' wide × 8'6" tall. It offers around 1,170 cubic feet of storage space — roughly equivalent to a one-bedroom apartment's worth of belongings.

Best for:

  • Small businesses needing extra storage
  • Residential storage during renovations
  • Farm equipment and supplies
  • Short-distance shipping

The 40-Foot Container

A 40-foot container doubles the floor space and offers around 2,390 cubic feet of capacity. These are the workhorse of the shipping industry and are ideal for larger storage needs or long-term projects.

Best for:

  • Construction site storage
  • Commercial inventory
  • Multi-room household moves
  • Workshop or office conversions

High Cube vs. Standard Height

Both 20' and 40' containers come in a 'High Cube' variant that adds an extra foot of height (9'6" total). This is ideal if you need to store tall equipment or plan to convert the container into a livable or work space.

Other Sizes Available

Steel Can Containers also stocks specialty sizes from 5' mini units up to 53' containers. These are perfect for unique applications where a standard size won't quite fit.

Making Your Decision

When choosing a size, always overestimate slightly. It's far better to have extra space than to realize your belongings or inventory won't fit. Contact our team in Winnipeg and we'll help you find the perfect match for your budget and requirements.
