Container Grading Explained

The container industry uses a grading system to classify units by age and condition. Understanding this system helps you get the best value for your investment.

One-Trip (New) Containers

A one-trip container has been used only once to ship goods from the manufacturer — usually overseas. They are essentially brand new, with minimal wear, original paint, and no rust. These are the premium option.

Pros of One-Trip Containers:

  • Pristine condition inside and out
  • No rust, dents, or odours
  • Longer lifespan
  • Ideal for office conversions or food-safe storage

Cargo-Worthy (CW) Used Containers

Cargo-worthy containers have been inspected and certified safe for international shipping. They may show surface rust, minor dents, and repainting, but are structurally sound and wind/water tight.

Wind & Water Tight (WWT)

WWT containers are retired from active shipping but are still watertight and suitable for long-term storage. These are typically the most affordable option.

Which Should You Choose?

If budget is your primary concern and you just need dry, secure storage — a used WWT container is an excellent choice. If you're building a container home, office, or need a clean aesthetic, invest in a one-trip unit.
